Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, ART is now used by practitioners worldwide to resolve a wide range of soft tissue conditions.
How does ART work? ART works by breaking up adhesions — dense collections of scar tissue that form when muscles and other tissues are injured. These adhesions can cause pain, stiffness, weakness, and restricted range of motion. During an ART session, the practitioner uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of tissues, then applies precisely directed tension while the patient moves the tissue through a specific range of motion.
Conditions treated with ART: - Headaches and neck pain - Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injuries - Tennis and golfer's elbow - Carpal tunnel syndrome - Sciatica and low back pain - Shin splints and plantar fasciitis - IT band syndrome and runner's knee
What to expect: ART sessions typically last 15-20 minutes. You may feel some discomfort during treatment as adhesions are broken up, but this should resolve quickly. Most patients notice improvement within 2-6 visits.
At Helix Sport + Spine, our ART-certified providers integrate this technique into comprehensive treatment plans to get you back to the activities you love.
