Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is a manual therapy technique that uses suction to lift and separate layers of tissue, increase blood flow, and promote healing. While it has roots in traditional Chinese medicine, modern practitioners use it as a complement to other soft tissue techniques.

How it works: Cups (silicone or glass) are placed on the skin and suction is applied, drawing tissue upward into the cup. This creates a negative pressure that increases blood flow to the area, separates fascial layers, and can help break up adhesions.

Benefits: - Increased local blood flow and nutrient delivery - Reduced muscle tension and fascial restriction - Pain relief through gate-control theory - Improved range of motion - Accelerated recovery between training sessions

What to expect: The cups may be left in place (static cupping) for 5-10 minutes, or moved along the tissue (dynamic cupping). You will feel a pulling sensation that should not be painful. The circular marks left afterward are not bruises — they are caused by blood being drawn to the surface and typically fade within 3-7 days.

Common applications: - Upper trap and neck tension - Low back tightness - IT band and quad restrictions - Post-workout recovery

At Helix, we integrate cupping with other manual therapy techniques as part of your individualized treatment plan.
