Functional Movement

Functional movement is the ability to produce and maintain a balance of mobility and stability along the kinetic chain while performing fundamental movement patterns. In simpler terms: can your body move the way it was designed to?

The seven fundamental movement patterns: 1. Squat — bilateral lower body 2. Hinge — hip-dominant movement 3. Lunge — unilateral lower body 4. Push — upper body pressing 5. Pull — upper body pulling 6. Carry — loaded locomotion 7. Rotation — trunk movement

Why dysfunctions matter: When one area of the body lacks mobility or stability, other areas compensate. A stiff ankle leads to knee valgus in a squat. A weak core leads to low back hyperextension during overhead pressing. These compensations accumulate over thousands of repetitions until they produce pain or injury.

The Helix approach: We use functional movement screening to identify asymmetries and limitations before they become injuries. This assessment reveals: - Left-right imbalances - Mobility restrictions - Stability deficits - Compensatory movement strategies

Once identified, we create a targeted corrective exercise program that addresses your specific limitations. The goal is to restore clean, symmetrical movement patterns that reduce injury risk and improve performance in the activities you love.
