Kinesiotaping: Not just for looks

You have probably seen athletes covered in colorful tape and wondered what it does. Kinesiology tape (K-tape) is an elastic therapeutic tape that, when applied correctly, can support injured tissues, reduce pain, and improve movement.

How it works: K-tape is applied with a specific stretch over the skin. Its elastic properties create a lifting effect on the skin, decompressing the space between the skin and underlying tissues. This: - Improves lymphatic drainage (reduces swelling) - Decreases pressure on pain receptors - Provides proprioceptive feedback (body awareness) - Supports muscles without restricting range of motion

Common applications: - Postural support (upper back, shoulders) - Swelling management (ankle sprains, post-surgical) - Muscle facilitation (weakened or inhibited muscles) - Pain reduction (low back, knee, neck) - Athletic performance support

What K-tape is NOT: It is not a substitute for proper treatment. Tape does not fix the underlying cause of your problem — it provides support while your body heals and you do the corrective work.

At Helix: Our providers are certified in kinesiology taping techniques and apply tape as part of your treatment plan. We also teach patients how to apply tape at home for ongoing support between visits.
