PNW Running

Running in the Pacific Northwest means embracing rain, varied terrain, and stunning scenery. Here are tips for thriving as a PNW runner year-round.

Gear essentials: - A lightweight, breathable rain jacket (not a heavy waterproof shell) - Moisture-wicking layers — avoid cotton at all costs - Trail shoes with good grip for wet roots and mud - A brimmed hat or visor to keep rain off your face - Reflective gear for dark winter mornings and evenings

Running in the rain: - Apply anti-chafe products (Body Glide) before heading out - Wear wool or synthetic socks to prevent blisters - Accept that you will get wet — the goal is to stay warm, not dry - Dry your shoes with newspaper or a fan (never a dryer)

Taking advantage of PNW terrain: - Hill repeats on Seattle's many steep streets build strength - Trail running on Tiger Mountain, Cougar Mountain, or the Burke-Gilman trail - Beach runs on low tide for sand resistance training - The Centennial Trail and Interurban Trail for long, flat runs

Seasonal considerations: - Winter: Shorter routes, headlamp, and a post-run warm-up routine - Spring: Allergy management — run after rain when pollen counts drop - Summer: Early morning runs to beat the heat (our brief hot season) - Fall: Peak trail running season — take advantage of it

The PNW running community is welcoming and active year-round. Embrace the drizzle.
